About Mahjong Tile Symbols
Mahjong tiles live in the Unicode βMahjong Tilesβ block (U+1F000βU+1F02B), added in Unicode 5.1 (2008). They cover the four winds, three dragons, the three suits (characters/wan, bamboo/sou, circles/pin) numbered 1β9, plus flower, season, joker and back tiles.
Note: only the Red Dragon π has a colored emoji form; the other 43 tiles are monochrome text symbols and render as black-and-white line drawings depending on your system font. They are real, copyable Unicode characters β not emoji.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are mahjong tiles emoji?
Mostly no. Only the Red Dragon π has an emoji presentation. The other 43 tiles are Unicode text symbols, so they render as black-and-white characters on most devices.
How do I copy a mahjong tile?
Click or tap any tile on this page to copy it to your clipboard, then paste it anywhere. Use βCopy all tilesβ to copy the whole set at once.
Why do the tiles look black and white?
Because 43 of the 44 tiles are text-presentation Unicode symbols rather than color emoji. Their exact look depends on the font your device uses.
Will mahjong tiles show on phones and social media?
Yes. They are standard Unicode characters supported on iOS, Android, Windows and macOS, and work in most apps, though the style varies by platform.
What do the suits wan, sou and pin mean?
They are the three number suits in mahjong: characters (wan), bamboo (sou) and circles (pin), each running from 1 to 9.
